Background Remover is Workroom's AI tool for one-step photo cutouts. It detects the subject of a photo and deletes everything behind it. The result is a PNG with a real alpha channel — the background is gone rather than painted white. There is nothing to configure: upload and generate.

Open Background Remover

Open Apps from the sidebar and click Background Remover. The app opens with a single panel on the right, Step 1: Image.

Add your image

Drag a file straight into the upload area, or click Select to open your assets. The panel that opens holds everything already in Workroom — generated, uploaded, or favorited — and also lets you upload a new file from your device. JPG, PNG, and WebP are supported.

Picking an image from your assets skips the download-and-re-upload round trip entirely.

The result comes back at the same pixel dimensions as the file you upload, so there is no reason to shrink an image beforehand.

Generate the cutout

Click Generate. The model automatically identifies the subject and removes everything else. A typical photo takes a few seconds; larger files take slightly longer.

Background Remover processes one image per generation. To cut out a batch, repeat the step for each file. Apps share a monthly pool of 5 free generations on the Free plan — once it's used, each run costs credits, with the exact cost shown on the Generate button.

Download the transparent PNG

The finished cutout opens with the background removed. Download it as a PNG or save it to your Workroom library, where it stays available to other apps — build a product scene around it, upscale it, adjust its color grade, or bring it into a video without exporting and re-uploading.

Save the result as PNG, not JPG. JPEG has no alpha channel, so exporting to it fills the transparent area with solid white.

What works best

The tool is strongest on subjects with a clear, readable silhouette:

People and full-body figures, including the gaps between an arm and a torso
Products, packaging, boxes, and shoes
Furniture, plants, and pets

Shots where the subject and the background are close in color and brightness are harder, and so are subjects with very fine outlines.

Troubleshooting

The wrong object was cut out. There is no mask to paint or refine, so the model picks the subject itself. When a frame contains two plausible subjects, crop it to the one you want and upload it again.

A glass object came back opaque. Everything around the object is removed cleanly, but whatever is visible through a transparent object stays baked into the cutout. Glassware, windows, and sheer fabric need manual cleanup in an image editor.

Hair edges look rough. Hair is the hardest case for any background remover. Tight, well-lit hairstyles come out fine; fine flyaway strands against a busy background may need touching up. Re-shooting or re-generating the source image against a plainer background usually helps more than retrying the cutout.

The background looks white instead of transparent. Check the file extension of what you downloaded and how you are viewing it — some previews render transparency as white. Open the PNG in an editor that shows an alpha channel to confirm.
